About Talking Therapies

Everyday life can be tough for anyone

Feeling persistently down often, job worries and relationship problems can be difficult situations to cope with. One in four people in the UK suffer from anxiety, depression and other emotional problems at some point in their lives.

Waltham Forest Talking Therapies IAPT can help. We’re a FREE, NHS therapy service that provides effective treatment. Our appointments are at flexible times and convenient locations – in GP practices and NHS buildings across Waltham Forest.

We offer different types of therapy to suit individual needs.

Group sessions

You can learn methods of coping with particular issues through discussion in small groups with other people who are experiencing similar problems to you . Many people find attending group therapy sessions helpful. Our groups include:

  • building self-esteem
  • managing long-term health conditions (such as diabetes)
  • gentle movements for stress, anxiety and depression
  • staying well at work
  • relaxation
  • building assertiveness
  • over-65 wellbeing
  • anxiety management
  • mindfulness
  • winter wellbeing group
  • post-traumatic stress disorder

Individual sessions

Our talking therapies include individual sessions with one of our therapists, using proven techniques to help you overcome specific issues. Types of therapy used and number of sessions will depend on the individual, the treatment plan will be discussed with you at the start of treatment. Individual sessions could include the following proven techniques:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
  • Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT)
  • Behavioural Couple Therapy (BCT)

How long does treatment take?

Our one-to-one and group therapy sessions vary in length, and range from one session a week for 6 weeks, to one session a week for up to 20 weeks.
